Timeline

November 2020
A Youth Advisory Board (YAB), comprising of Youth Activists throughout the world, is formed. These youth are informing every stage of the project, drawing on their own unique experiences to support the youth of this project.

2021
2021 was the year of planning and preparation. We worked closely with the YAB over this time, exploring different methods for online and hybrid working. The global COVID-19 situation prevented any face-to-face research, so much of this planning focussed on various scenarios. We also hosted an online conference with the YAB, recruited an extra researcher in Vietnam, and a Digital Expert to assist with the online elements. We attended training such as ArcGIS Survey 123 training, and researched many other hybrid methods and tools.

March - April 2022
Applications open for youth in Vietnam to participate in the project, and over 370 applications are received. These are then shortlisted to 60 applicants - based on diversity across gender, education level, ethnicity, and existing levels of climate change knowledge.

Shortlisted applicants are invited to a workshop in Hanoi, where researchers work with them to understand climate change, and the various activities they will partake in, should they be selected. A total of 16 applicants are invited to participate in the project. Selection is once again based upon the aforementioned categories, and engagement.

Launch Event - those who agreed to participate from the selected applications, attend a launch event in Hanoi. Participants engage in team-building exercises, learn more about the project, and get to grips with the online features of the project, namely ArcGIS and Online Diary Logging via Flipgrid.

June/July 2022
Members attend another workshop, this time in Xuan Thuy National Park. Here, participants learn how to become social researchers. Together, we explore interview techniques, focus groups and other sources of supplementary data. We utilise role play and put theory into practice by interviewing local community members in the National Park. We learn about cultural differences across the three provinces with a cultural evening, filled with dancing, games, music and more ...

July - October 2022
In their home provinces, youth are working within their teams to collect local climate change stories using the skills developed in previous workshops. Youth are reflecting on their experiences, and sharing these online with the wider youth and academic team.

Workshops in each respective province will take place. Creative specialists and social researchers from both the UK and Vietnam will support youth in turning their collected stories into creative representations.

Picture
October - December 2022
Ongoing online support will continue, with in-country creatives working directly with the youth as their representations continue to take shape.

December 2022
Showcase Event - Youths Creative representations will be shown at a showcase event, where policy makers, NGOs, other youth and the general public will attend. They will share their journey, and encourage action. There will also be a water/land puppetry performance, curated by the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, that conceptualises the stories the youth have collected over the past year.

And the Legacy Beyond
Youth's creative expressions and climate stories will be hosted online, and transported across the globe in a Mobile Exhibition, in galleries, museums and in public spaces. These stories will also live within each local province, where youth will continue to share and communicate; raising awareness and resilience.

The project is funded by the British Academy’s Youth Futures Programme, supported under the UK Government's Global Challenges Research Fund
