Project Participants

Our participants are from three key areas in the Red River Catchment: Nam Định, Phú Thọ, and Lào Cai. We have 6 youth members from each province, and they will be working together to explore their localised climate change challenges, and  potential solutions. They come from a diverse range of backgrounds with various socio-cultural demographics, ensuring a broad range of voices are included in the project.

Nam Định

Nam Định is a flat, deltaic region located at the mouth of the Red River Delta. It has a population of approximately 5 million, 99% of which is Kinh ethnicity. The main economic drivers are agriculture (rice and animal husbandry) and aquaculture (fish sauce, clams).

The main climate related issues they face are sea level rise, Salinisation, Effects of storms and tropical depressions, Flooding, Reducing mangrove biodiversity and Coastal erosion.

Phú Thọ

Phú Thọ is a mountainous region in the Red River Catchment and is made up of many industrial parks. Mining and mineral processing are common economic activities that drive development in the region. It has a population of around 1.37 million, of which is made up of approximately 34 ethnic groups.

Climate Change poses many issues here, as the rivers have a steep slope, meaning the water rushes back quickly, causing big floods. Heavy rain, local rain in many areas exceeded historical milestones. This is exhaerbated as unseasonal rain (such as earlier rain and late rain) that goes beyond that which are typically expected. There is also excess food discharge at the Thac Ba, Hoa Binh, Tuyen Quang hydropower plants

Lào Cai

Lào Cai is the northernmost site of this project, found in the high mountain areas of the Red River Catchment. It has a population of around 615,620, comprising of 25 ethnic groups. 64.09% of the population are from an ethnic minority background and the most common economic activities are agriculture and forestry.

Climate Change poses specific issues such as abnormal rain patterns that increase water scarcity, thus reducing crop yield. They are also facing increasing extreme weather phenomena such as extreme high-low temperatures, and an increased number of storms and tropical depressions.
